My First Fully Painted Fantasy Army

If you have been following this blog or know me well, then you also know that I have been mainly dabling in Sci-Fi miniatures of all sorts. But lately it seems that the Fantasy bug has bitten me. 

As mentioned previously I had been struggling to paint an Oldhammer Dwarf Army, but since we started playing Age of Sigmar I have actually been able to fully paint a gameable army. Only 1000 points so far, mind you, but I have plenty of models to expand my army.

So far my army consist of the following characters and units:

Dwarf General

Runepriest

Engineer

Two units of 10 Warriors

One unit of 10 Quarrellers

A Cannon and a Giant

Heartbreaker Hobbies Dark Dwarfs

Ever since I saw these lovely (but odd) Dwarf miniatures, from Heartbreaker Hobbies, I wanted to use them with my other Oldhammer Dwarfs. They didn't quite fit in with their rather strange style, but still I couldn't help myself buying a bunch of them. The ones I have is actually a mix of the Heartbreaker Dark Dwarfs and their "normal" Dwarfs, but I decided to do them all as Dark Dwarfs since their style is more similar to each other, than to the rest of my Dwarfs.

First I was going to paint them as D&D Duargar, but trying out a lot of different paint schemes I could not really find one I liked. In the end i came up with the combo of bluish skin and white hair and I think it generally works.

Their attire is mainly armour, but on their clothed parts I decided to stick with my army's main colour scheme of red and white. Again this works out fine for most minis, but I am not 100% satisfied with everything.

Fluff-wise these will be allied Dark Dwarfs from the Under Mountain, but AoS game-wise they will be played as Dwarf Warriors with hand weapons and shields.

Building on the background story for my Dwarf Army the main portion of my Dwarfs left the mountains and moved to the hills outside the main human settlements, acquiring the lifestyle and habits of the humans. This works well with the Marauder and White Knight renaissance style minis and of course some of my older Dwarfs are just grumpy and still do it the old ways.

Then we have these Dark Dwarfs now. In my background story for them I decided that these are the Dwarfs that stayed behind in the mountains. Apparently something happened there which drove their regular kin to move and the same event has driven these guys to dig deeper and now live deep beneath the mountain.

The Dark Dwarfs have become twisted in mind and appearance, but when a war is fought on the ground they still come to help their distant relatives. Not only because they are related, but also because they just love the bloodshed and mayhem.

A bit of a progress in my current quest to paint an Oldhammer themed Dwarf army for Age of Sigmar.

Gamingwise I play the Pike Dwarfs as having 2 handed great weapons (or whatever it is called) and no shields. This is apparently a not so good choice for the Dwarf Warriors, but at least the unit looks good.

I choose to play the army as Dispossessed and use their traits, even though some of my troops are considered allies, according to the rules. All the Dwarf units are just considered Dispossessed and thus benefit from the trade, while the Giant is treated as an ally and gets no bonus. 

So far, so good... Coming up next is Quarellers and some Dark Dwarf Warriors.

The Age of Sigmar Cometh!

So I guess it has been nearly a year since my last post. Again life just got in the way for some time, but hopefully I can bring back some action to this blog.

Today I met up with Dr. The Viking from Dr. The Viking's Miniature Games Hell. Apparently we got sucked into the Games Workshop vortex once again and now we are playing Age of Sigmar (YIKES!).

Dr. The Viking has been speedpainting a Chaos Horde (You can go to his blog to see the progress) and I have dug up my Oldhammer Dwarfs. 

I never got around to finish an actual Warhammer army and when we gamed Dragon Rampant I never managed to finsh an army for that either, so my army still consist of a lot of unfinished models among the few I have finished so far.

There is really not much more to say. We are just having some fun with miniatures.

Age of Sigmar seems to be pretty easy on the rules side, while still having enough meat on the bones to give each unit their own flavour. So far I like it.

Heartbreaker Hobbies Starship Marines

I had these six Starship Marines lying around for a couple of years. They used to be Heartbreaker Hobbies, but are now sold at Black Tree Designs. Too bad they currently only have six poses available, but let's face it, I probably won't need more anyway.

I actually got started on these in a kind of random way. They had been standing prepped and basecoated for more than a year, but I could never decide for a colour scheme for them. So standing there collecting dust I found them while looking for something completely different and I decided to give them some paint.

I remember how I originally wanted to paint them green, but since I painted so much green lately I ended up giving the first one a white/red scheme. It ended up looking pretty good and so I wanted to paint them all this way, but I wanted to keep one in different colours, so he could be a leader of sorts. In the end I gave them three different paintjobs in pair of twos.

This will work well for skirmish settings, having them prance about in pairs as guards or explore barren wastes in their powered armour.
