USX: Modern Day Heroes

It seems to be that time of the year again. Gaming and painting is going a bit slow for me and most other things too really. But still I managed to get a game in with my regular gaming buddy Thorbjørn.

We tried out the USX: Modern Day Heroes system. It is a basic set of rules from RAFM, made to support their range of Modern Day Heroes miniatures and Cthulhu monsters. It doesn't really seem like they are putting any support into it anymore, but we still decided to give one of the basic scenarios a go.

Pitting Deep Ones against a modern S.W.A.T. team in the outback somewhere in Cthulhu County. The Deep Ones are trying to collect some boxes of unknown occult stuff in a small hut and the S.W.A.T. is going to hinder them.

Closing in on eachother.

Heroic Deep Ones gather.

First S.W.A.T. member down.

A Deep One picking up a crate.

In the end only this dude was left.

In conclusion, the rules are easy to learn and works out quite well. We only used the basic rules, but they were so easy that the advanced rules should be no problem to use in the future.

I will be showcasing this game at some local Danish events during the year.

Tactical Miniatures S.W.A.T. Team

This summer I am going to a private miniatures convention for our gaming group. One of the games I will be bringing is USX: Modern Day Heroes, from RAFM Miniatures, and for that game I need a S.W.A.T. Team and some Deep Ones.

I already painted the USX S.W.A.T. Team previously, but since I don't really like those miniatures I have been searching for substitutes and found these awesome miniatures from Tactical Miniature.

Battle For Dos Angeles

Back in the days, when I started my venture into alternative gaming and my gaming group and I played a lot of post apocalypse style games, we had quite a loose setting where almost everything could (and would) happen. I really think we had a lot of great games and an interesting storyline going on, but eventually things died and we moved onto other genres.

The main problem used to be the rules. Whatever we tried out there always seemed to be something not quite right. But still we had a lot of fun and I always thought it was a shame we never did more in the genre.

It all probably just comes down to finding some rules that basically works out and tweak it to our own gaming needs. So recently I have been reading up on the Nuclear Renaissance rules from Ramshackle Games again and we decided to give it another go.

For this games I set up a Phagon cloning station in the city of Dos Angeles. The cloning station has been working illegally for some time, but the local law enforcement, represented by Inquisitor Gar and his corrupt posse of Marines and Squats, was not satisfied with the amount of bribes and decides to show and example by destroying some cloning tanks in the outskirts of the city.

The Phagon cloning station at Dos Angeles

Inquisitor Gar arrives in a massive Iron Grumbler making a lot of noise and making sure everyone hears him make his entry.

An Ambull quickly pops out of the ground disturbed by the noise.

The alerted Phagons get some Ambull love too.

Ambulls everywhere.

Inquisitor Gar disembarks the Iron Grumbler and runs for cover on the left flank while the Iron Grumbler rams a cluster of smokestacks from the underground facilities.

An abominable Running Ripper chages towards the Iron Grumbler.

And a PSI Wolf try to fend of the Inquisitor.

The Piscean Warrior hide in a building.

Ram!

The Running Ripper was gunned down and as Dr. Brain runs to the aid of his beloved pet he gets run down by the Iron Grumbler.

Meanwhile the Piscean Warrior has been gunning down the Inquisitorial Medic and Inquisitor Gar himself, but the last Marine decides to still blow up some cloning tanks.

This Ambull was beaten to the ground by twin powerfists!

PSI Wolf enters the Iron Grumbler.

In the end only a few models was left on the table and only the Iron Grumbler was left on the Inquisitorial side. Trying to run ram another cloning tank but failing in the attempt. Unfortunately Inquitor Gar and his men had forgotten to close the hatch when they left the tank and a PSI Wolf jumped on the tank, into it and ate the driver.

In conclusion the game was quite fun and the rules worked out ok. We made a few mistakes along the way and I am sure things will be even better in future games of Nuclear Renaissance.

Tyranid Warriors

Everything I paint recently has been speed painted, or as speedy as I can do it and still feel satisfied with the result. Even so my level of speed painting has reached a new level of lazyness.

I have been enmassing Tyranid Warriors for some time now, not really on purpose, it is just something which has happened kind of by itself. At some point I bought the Advanced Space Crusade game and recently I acquired the Tyranid Attack game.

I have no idea how many complete plastic Tyranid Warriors I have now, but the collection is ranging from mint on sprue to painted with a stick and broken into bits and pieces.

I decided to start out salvageing what I could from the painted and broken models I had and let the mint models wait for later. So if I eventually decide to sell off some of them it will be easier to get rid of those in good mint condition.

Tyranid Warriors on board their mothership.

These three are the first to have emmerged from the stripping jar, having broken limbs and weapons glued back together and get a new paintjob.

As you can see they have been given a very fast and basic paintjob and to elaborate on the lazy speed paint I gave them, these models only have five colours on them. A basecoat of red and bone, washed with a brown wash and then highlighted with a brighter red and the bone. The fifth colour is a light pink for the eyes.

Backsides.

To be honest, I never really liked these models, I think they are terrible plastic crap, which is why I gave them such a fast and sloppy paintjob. But I think it works out and I am happy to field these as playing pieces in upcoming games of Advanced Space Crusade or Tyranid Attack.

I will probably paint the next batch in some different colours for a bit variation, after all they were kind of fun to paint.
