Orktober 2021

According to official Ork lore every month is Orktober...

Nob 'Umin Gut'Nasha and his Death Skull Boyz.

Like all my other 40K and Rogue Trader stuff it is something I paint on and off from time to time. So with all that crazy 40K 2nd edition going on I found out that I have enough Orks to field a small 1-2000pts army. I devided them up in Mobs and it seems to work out.

First finished unit is some Death Skull Boyz. I always liked the blue face look, but not so much the raggedy look of the patched together clothes and gear. So my Death Skull Mob has the blue faces, but chose to wear a rather uniform look of military style green and brown colours.

Ork Minder.

This is a random Ork I painted during summer. He only has one ear and is wearing purple outfit, he is clearly crazy, so I have decided to make him a minder for my Wierd Boy. Eventually he will get a banner.

The nasty lads.

Power Armour Nob will join a unit of Evil Sunz Nobs and Thrugg has been degraded to a simple Ork Minder after he joined the Ork Big Mob. Maybe that will change in the future....

Space Police Agents and Ork Weirdboy

This time I have a mix of some old and some new. I repainted an Ork Weirdboy and I slightly updated a couple of Four A Miniatures (I believe another company bought the rights to these, I thought it was Macrocosm, but could not find them on their page). Also there is a dog.

The Four A guys are painted in mostly blue and white colours, which is the universal colours of police types, so they are a couple of rogue space police/enforcers, travelling around with their dog and apparently arresting Ork Weirdboys.

"Hands up you scum!"

Weirdboy

The Weirdboy doesn't have a name like the other guys, he is going to be part of my Ork forces, for now they are still a nameless bunch of raiders.

I was searching for this Weirdboy for quite some time and when I finally got it I painted it right away. It was already painted and I decided to paint on top of the existing paintjob as a guide/inspiration when I made his colours fit my Ork gang.

Original paintjob

Side by side

Okking

Once a cop, always a cop. He used to be a big shot crime investigator on Earth, but his drinking problems got him discharged with disgrace. Now he is a low life copper hunting down trouble in the far reaches of the known Universe.

Sams Eye

Sams Eye is not really called Sams Eye, but everybody has been calling him that since he was stationed on the far away outpost moon Sams Eye. Now he is just known as the Copper from Sams Eye.

Gut

Gut is a good dog. Friendly and happy. Sometimes he eats out the guts of outlaws too.

Orktober 2016 Part II

So I managed to finish my Orks for the 2016 orktober Fest. I painted 6 new Space Orks and took some photos of them mixed with my already painted ones. This brings me to a total of 21 painted Orks.

The complete gang!

Nobs in power armour.

Group with command and banner.

Group with Nob.

Group with Nob carrying a plasma pistol and chainsword.

The colours came out a bit strange on some of the photos, but I hope you can still make out what is what on the pics.

Orktober 2016 Part I

Once again it is Orktober. I forgot about it last year and even though I mostly paint Darkest Africa these days I want to do some more Space Orks this year.

To get the mood going I will post a picture, I found in the computer, of some Orks I painted some time ago, but still haven't been posted on my blog.

A Big Boss and his retinue!

So I hope to have a few more boyz painted this season and if all else fails, maybe just take some updated photos of my Space Orks, there might be a few new models among them anyway.

So for now, Happy Orktober!

Deredo Class Dreadnought

One more Dreadnought done. This time I laid some paint on the classic Deredo Class Attack Support Dreadnought. Armed with a powerfist and a missile launcher it is ready to take on both armour and infantry.

Once again I gave this Dreadnought a pretty basic paintjob, adding a few details here and there. I got inspired by a picture of a Dreadnought in the Compendium book and gave this one a Cat face with eyes, whiskers and fangs. It is hard to see in the pictures, since he is leaning forward, so the face is in the shadows a lot.

Deredo Class Dreadnought "Eddy" with Marines and a Contemptor.

Ork Raiders on the attack.

Massive Dreadnought resistance.

Next to go: Furibundus Class Dreadnought.

Contemptor, Deredo and Furibundus Class Dreadnoughts.

My First Orktober

Apparently it is Orctober and everybody have to paint Orcs. I never painted many Orcs before, actually I think I only ever painted two Orcs before and those were for a friend. But of course I already had a huge load of unpainted Orcs and Space Orks lying around, so I jumped right in and started painting up some of my Space Ork Raiders.

Unfortunately I didn't manage to paint as many as I wanted to, but I finished five and I guess it is better than nothing. I have another five which are half way done, so hopefully I will boost my Raiders to 10 Orks soon.

Here is the bunch I managed to finish.

I am not trying to tie in my Orks with any perticular clan. I don't really like the stricter structures of the Ork clans and tried to paint my Orks as a bunch of nasty paramilitary raiding misfits.

Here they are raiding an Imperial ARBCO station.

Sneaky Ork bastards.

"Give us the gas and the truck and die!"

The Ork Boss face off against Inquisitor Gar.

And I took some close ups of different angles of the Orks. I think they turned out really good and I am happy about the colours I have chosen for them. I was trying to mainly use some different shades of brown, military green and some brighter reds to contrast the skin.

Some light yellow/brown flack armour and gloves, darker brown belts and pouches, clothes in military green and armour in red or green.

The Boss in his red power armour. It is really a classic, so he just has to look that way.
The other guy is clearly an angry militant Ork, so he is mostly in green combat colours.

Back.

The boys in subtle colours. One sporting a fancy facepaint.

I have chosen to paint at least one Ork boy, from the Space Ork Raiders box, for each other Ork I paint. This is because I have so many dublicates of these and doing it like this I won't end up having all the same models left when I finish more of the unique models.

Of course this is not nearly all the Orks I have, I hope to finish the next five soon and eventually have a larger force painted. I also have an Ork Dreadnought, some Tinboys and a Robork and controller.

Orks in progress.

And my Dark Angels Terminators in progress.
Just to show I haven't forgotten about these.

The Battle For Amasec (40K 2nd Edition Battle Report)

Dr. The Viking (of Dr. The Viking's Miniature Games Hell) and myself decided to start out the year with some 40K 2nd Edition. We played ~ 2000 points and it took us almost 8 hours....

The situation started with an alarm call from the colony Baxta 1 on Yx dated 847.M41/132l. Colonist claimed that Orks had overrun their settlement and taken hold in the settlements amasec producing facilities.
Amasec is of vital importance in this sector as it is the main channeling substance for Imperial righteousness and belief.

Inquisitor Gar and a retinue of Space Marines was sent to the planet to investigate.

The initial report of the Inquisitor is represeneted below.

+++Incomplete Report from Inquisitor Gar, planet Yx, the Coldburn Sector+++

Date 847.M41/244

Snippet is missing due to intersystem E-field disturbances.

"...The colonists have therefore decided to flee the settlement. Production of amasec has completely ceased. The production must be restored before riots ensue. The Orks present in the settlement seem to hail to the Warlord called Batshit. An assault has been prepared for 847.M41/300 which is the annual Ork shooting festivity. They Orks should be drunk by then."

+++Report ends+++

We had a couple of special rules added, like the Orks should roll each turn to see which units or vehicle crews were drunk and we had to drink some beer too.... My pictures turned out pretty blurred, maybe Dr. The Viking took some better... But here goes:

An overview of the battlefield during turn 1.

Drunken Orks climbing over the rooftops.

Inquisitor Gar (left), with a retinue of Mercenaris and Marines.

The Lieutenant charges across the street, covered by the Terminators.

The Medic revives the Librarian after he recieved a direct hit from a plasma canon.

I quickly painted the Medic for this battle, but he is not all done yet.

Turn 3: The Terminators holds the street!

And this was apparently my last picture...

This picture came next in my camera....

The battle raged a bit back and forth, the Orks started out pretty good (even though most vehicle crews were drunk from turn one. An out of control Wartrak managed to shoot a direct hit on the Librarian and gave him 12 wounds or something like that. Luckily the Medic near by managed to revive him to one wound and after that the Medic and the Librarian camped out in cover sending out loads of Psychic Smite to the Ork hordes.

On the left flank the Inquisitor was standing half the game looking the wrong way, but when he decided to join the battle he singlehandedly wiped out the Ork Commandos. Not that it had much influence to the general game, but I guess it was outweighed by Warboss Batshits decision to sit back and forget to do anything for the first two turns too.

A Marine Squad had decided to take cover in the building opposite to the Amasec Brewery, but when they had positioned themselves in the building it took a hit from a Leman Russ battle-canon and everyone was falling around inside and did not do much good in this game.

I think in the end the battle was probably won by the Marines. The Amsec Brewery had been secured and most of the Ork vehicles had been destroyed, but had the game continued a few turns more it is hard to tell what could have happened.

The game was long, chaotic and great fun, so if this is setting the standard for my 2014 gaming year I will look forward to what other old school adventures we will experience.

Rogue Trader Gaming (With Nuclear Renaissance Rules)

I think it comes as no surprise, if I tell you, that we are a couple of folks who really like the Warhammer 40K universe and the models (at least the old ones). On the other hand the rules doesn't really do it for us at all. I won't get into details about all the things we don't like about modern 40K gaming, but the main problems are the huge amount of models needed, the general tournament oriented attitude and competetive approach towards gaming.

We have previously tried out Rogue Trader by playing Battle at the Farm, the scenario included in the original rulebook. Things didn't really work out that well. The system is great in the ways that it is narative, very open and free, but the rules are heavy and kind of hard getting into. So before going back to Rogue Trader gaming we decided to try and play some games using Nuclear Renaissance from Ramshackle Games.

Priviously we have played some post apocalypse games using Nuclear Renaissance and that worked out really well. We already played these games using a mix off all sorts of miniatures, which also included old Rogue Trader models, so we knew it would be possible to at least play succesful games with the Nuclear Renaissance rules and after the succesful Kickstarter funding of Tome of Tridlins (Nuclear Renaissance expansion) it was time to give it a go again.

Since one of my usual gaming buddies, Thorbjørn, just painted up some Rogue Trader Orks (See more at Dr. The Viking's Miniature Games Hell) it was obvious that we should do a classic Marines vs. Orks game.

After re-reading the rules we worked out some profiles for the Marines, Orks, Gretchin and their weapons and then we plunged right into the game!

"A mysterious space craft has suddenly appeared by a small Imperial research facility in the wastes. Investigation has shown that the space craft was hostile and a small band of Ork pirates have taken over the settlement.
As the station is in posession of some very important research results a nearby scouting squad of World Eater marines is sent to recover the documents and anything else important. They are accompanied by a scientist who has been working on the secret project."

The Orky menace at the captured research facility.

The scientist accompanied by a squad of World Eater marines.

The Orks are allerted and move into positions for taking on the marines.

Marines slowly advancing towards the shuttle.

An ork sentry shoots the marine commander with a lucky bolter shot.

The marines loses his armor and at that point we decided to end the game.

Well, that was ceartainly something else. The game was a test to see if the rules would work out for Rogue Trader gaming and in conclusion we decided that the rules worked out fine. But we still had some troubles with the game. We had already chosen to ignore the part of the rules about how to build up your gangs, so when we when we chose the profiles and equipment of the characters we just chose whatever sounded like it was fitting for marines and orks and this didn't really work out. We made up power armor and bolters by mixing different weapon and armor profiles and upgrades and in the end I think some of those things was just too powerfull.

We have not given up on trying out Nuclear Renaissance for Rogue Trader gaming, but we do need to work on the profiles of the equipment and such.

The problems we did encounter was mainly my fault, since I was in charge of reading the rules and making the chracters, and generally I have no idea if rules and things work out before I have tried out a game or two. But I think this first game has given me a pretty good insight in what things we need to change and I am sure that next time we give it a go it will already be much better.

Doing a project like 40K in another set of rules is always going to be a matter of balancing fluff against what will make a fun game and in the end I hope we will be able to make ourself a Nuclear Renaissance list tweaked for our likings and list of profiles for standard marines, orks, eldar and the classic weapons like bolters, chainswords, shuriken catapults and so on.
